Coda Musice Centre

We won a competition to design a music centre located near Christchurch, Dorset.
Coda's vision was to create a place deeply sensitive to the sound worlds.  A place for meaningful musical dialogue.
The design has evolved through a process of transformation from the already established static, regular, classical courtyard, (a good expression of the late Victorian home farm in its design and rational form) to something that reflects creativity and its processes. The design reflects the importance of the work within and creates a difference - whilst holding onto the existing beauty and identity. Coda's activities will still be contained and inward-looking in the peaceful embrace of the yard.
We have retained respect for the existing buildings and scale and we wish to make a strong architectural and sculptural statement in the present that is respectful to the past and would also say something creatively and meaningful - that would last through this generation for the future.
The entrance is a gentle structure emerging from the existing with warmth and connection. It invites, inspires, and offers a sense of discovery and lightness. A place to create, to be inspired, to learn, to discover.
